MUMBAI: After being appointed as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, Ashok Chavan was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, while Chhagan Bhujbal took oath of office as the Deputy Chief Minister, in a simple function held at the Raj Bhavan on Monday.
Chavan said that considering the situation prevailing after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, it was not appropriate to have a gala function.
Governor S C Jamir also administered oath to a 24-member state Cabinet, which included six new faces, among them, two women, one each from the Congress and the NCP.
Chavan was made the new leader of Democratic Front Government on Friday after Vilasrao Deshmukh resigned owning moral responsibility for the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
Bhujbal has been appointed in place of R R Patil who also quit last week for the same reasons.
Meanwhile, rebel Congress leader Narayan Rane who was suspended from the party said that he had not received any communication of having been suspended.
Rane, who did not attend the swearing-in ceremony, said that he was observing the developments and would chalk out his strategy in the next few days.
