NEW DELHI: The once powerful national leaders of the BJP are slowly coming to terms with their lot, getting ready to welcome a reluctant heir to the party throne in Delhi. It is hard to keep the smile on, though. Not entirely their fault then that it is turning into a bit of a comedy.

Privately they lament Nitin Gadkari is much junior to them. But for BJP national spokesperson Prakash Javadekar it’s a double-whammy. He is to be the cheerleader by default as Gadkari is from Maharashtra, his home state. Not known for quotable quotes, Javadekar on Wednesday outdid himself by finding Gadkari’s great political relevance in the party in the meaning of his name. “In Marathi, Gadkari means ‘protector or guard of the fort under attack’. He is going to be true to his name,’’ he said, pleased as punch at the wordplay.
