CBI Files 2 Cases against Sand Mafia

BHOPAL: Acting on the directives of the Gwalior Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, the CBI registered two cases relating to alleged attempt to murder government officials by members of sand-mining mafia in Morena.

The two cases, which till now were being probed by the civil lines police station, Morena, relates to the attack on the team members from the National Chambal Sanctuary, Devri, Morena and Special Armed Force (SAF) by the members of sand mafia.

The incident had taken place on March 2 when some tractors carrying illegally-mined sand were stopped by the said team, following which the accused tried to run over the officials.

The second case, which has been registered under multiple Sections of the IPC against unknown persons, related to alleged attempt to murder the public servants.

According to the CBI, when the tractors carrying sand was stopped by the said team, the accused persons accompanying the tractors and riding on motor-cycles, fired at the officials with country-made revolvers, in which one Head Constable of SAF was injured.

Later, the Gwalior Bench, while hearing a PIL, ordered a CBI inquiry on April 21 following which a five-member CBI team led by an inspector rank officer reached Morena last week and set up its camp at the Circuit House.

After conducting the preliminary investigations, it took over the case diary from the state police.

The sand mafia enjoys the patronage and protection of local politicians connected to Bhopal.

In March 2012, a 2009 batch IPS officer, Narendra Kumar, was crushed to death by the mining mafia in Morena district after he tried to stop a tractor carrying illegally quarried stones.
