“An exceptionally brilliant student who makes everything look easy” is how former professor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Pushpesh Pant describes the recently appointed Foreign Secretary of India, S Jaishankar.
With two days remaining for his retirement, Jaishankar was appointed as the new Foreign Secretary of India, replacing Sujatha Singh. He joined the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 1973 to pursue a PhD in International Relations.
“Even though he was a remarkably bright student, he was also very meticulous with his academics and work,” said noted academician Pant. He added that Jaishankar’s stint in countries like China, Russia and US are the desirable ingredients necessary for making it to the top post in Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
He is the son of noted Indian strategic affairs analyst and former bureaucrat K Subrahmanyam, whom Pant refers as a relatively reserved individual and a hard task master. Jaishankar on the other hand, could crack intelligent jokes without being sarcastic, Pant adds.
