Janak Raj Gupta cremated in Jammu

Mufti attended the cremation of former parliamentarian Janak Raj Gupta, who passed away on Sunday.

JAMMU: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today attended the cremation of veteran Congress leader and former parliamentarian Janak Raj Gupta, who passed away yesterday.

Besides Mufti, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Gulam Nabi Azad, J&K Congress Chief Gulam Ahmed Mir and Advisor to the Chief Minister, Prof Amitabh Mattoo also took part in the cremation of the Gupta at the Jogi Gate cremation ground here.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee has deeply condoled the sad demise of the former MP and veteran Congress leader.

A condolence meeting was held here today at Congress headquarter to condole the sad demise of Gupta. Azad, Mir and other senior leaders of the party attended the meeting.

Janak Raj Gupta expires yesterday morning, after he suffered a massive heart attack on Saturday evening and was shifted to the Super Specialty Hospital in the city where he breathed his last. He was 79.

Gupta had a long inning in politics and served the state and Congress in different capacities during his career.

Gupta was political advisor to former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. He first became a member of the legislative council in 1969 and was elected as an MLA from R S Pura assembly constituency in 1977 and 1983.

The next year, he become a member of the Lok Sabha from Jammu-Poonch constituency. He had contested the seat on a Congress ticket and defeated Dr Karan Singh who had fought as an Independent candidate.

He was re-elected to Parliament from the same constituency in 1989.
