NHRC issues notice to UP authorities over death of Dadri key accused

Mohmadd Akhlaq was mob lynched in Bisara village of Dadri for alleged cow slaughter. The case is still progressing before the court. 

NEW DELHI: A day after the main accused in Dadri mob lynch case died at a hospital in Delhi, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh authorities on Wednesday, to respond within four weeks.   

22 year old, Ravi who was in police custody in Gautam Buddh Nagar jail was brought to Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital, after he complained of respiratory problems, after which he succumbed. According to the police, the reason behind his death was vector-borne disease, but the medical report is awaited.

Taking suo-moto cognizance, the NHRC on ground of violation of human rights of the prisoner has issued the notice to Director General, Police and Director General, Prisons, Uttar Pradesh, to respond in four weeks.   

“The allegations regarding beating of the prisoner by some police personnel in judicial custody are serious in nature. The Commission has also observed that the reported different versions and opinions of the jail and the hospital authorities and the suspicion raised by the family members of the deceased prisoner indicate that the matter requires a thorough probe to determine the facts, which led to his death” the NHRC said in a statement.

The human rights body has further observed that "Someone, who is suffering from illness in judicial custody cannot avail the medical treatment of his own choice. According to the media report, the authorities did not inform the family about the deteriorating condition of the prisoner. It was only after his death on October 4 that his family was informed".
