

MUMBAI: One of India’s leading Hindustani classical singers Kishori Amonkar passed away late on Monday night. She was 85.
Amonkar was an innovator of the Jaipur gharana and considered one of the foremost singers in the Hindustani tradition. She was conferred the Padma Vibhushan in 2002. She passed away at her Mumbai residence.
She performed in the classical genre khayal and the light classical genres thumri and bhajan and was known for her melodious renditions.
Amonkar trained under her mother, classical singer Mogubai Kurdikar of the Jaipur gharana, but experimented with a variety of vocal styles all through her career.
She was considered one of the pre-eminent representatives of Hindustani classical music. Amonkar was born on April 10, 1931.
