SRINAGAR: Bodies of three soldiers, who were missing after their post was hit by multiple avalanches in Batalik sector in Ladakh region of  Jammu and Kashmir, have been retrieved.

Unprecedented rainfall and snowfall in the State had triggered multiple avalanches at Batalik sector of Ladakh region, a defence spokesman in Srinagar, Colonel Rajesh Kalia said.

He said an army post in the sector also came under the avalanches yesterday.

“Five soldiers were buried after the post was hit by avalanches. Immediately, army’s specially trained and equipped rescue teams launched the rescue operation to rescue the five soldiers,” he said.

Two of the soldiers were rescued while three went missing.

“Bodies of three missing soldiers were recovered by the rescue teams today,” Kalia said.

Kashmir has been experiencing unprecedented rains since April 4. The upper reaches have also experienced unexpected snowfall in the month of April.

In view of unexpected snowfall, authorities have issued avalanche alert and asked people living in upper reaches to be cautious while moving out.

At least 20 army men have been killed in snow avalanches in Kashmir in January this year.

The Valley witnessed record snowfall in winter this month.

The continuous rainfall has triggered flood-like situation in Valley and authorities have declared floods and asked people living close to embankments in central and South Kashmir to be vigilant.

However, the water level has steadied a bit after halt in rain.

The weather department has predicted improvement in weather conditions from today.
