Retired headmaster booked under Maintenance and Welfare of Senior Citizens Act for pitiful condition of 90-year-old mother

HYDERABAD: In what is probably a first for the State, a retired headmaster was booked under the Maintenance and Welfare of Senior Citizens Act, 2007 for ill-treating and neglecting his 90-year-old mother, and leaving her naked on his balcony in the scorching heat. The district administration was alerted after her plight was circulated by neighbours on Whatsapp.

According to Mancherial Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) BSV Pratap, the woman, Radhamma, was naked when they rescued her.

When the RDO initially went to the house, he faced stiff resistance from Ram Venkat Narsaiah at his house at Hitech City in Mancherial town.

The RDO along with police officials had to force open the doors to find the elderly woman in a pitiful state. Seeing her plight, Pratap purchased a saree for the woman and ensured that she was shifted to the Mancherial Government Hospital for treatment.

"We have filed a case under the Maintenance and Welfare of Senior Citizens Act, 2007 which mandates providing food, clothing, medical assistance and treatment for parents by their children,'' Pratap said.

“Based on this, we are conducting counselling session for the family members. This is the first incident that came to our notice after the formation of Mancherial district. Radhamma will be under the care of an old age home. Her daily expenditure will be cut from her son’s pension,” informed BSV Pratap.
