Officer who probed 2002 Gujarat riot cases, YC Modi is new National Investigation Agency chief

The decision was taken on Monday by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet following a Home Ministry proposal.

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Monday appointed YC Modi, a 1984-batch (Assam- Meghalaya cadre) IPS officer as the new Director General of National Investigation Agency (NIA). Modi was part of the Supreme Court-appointed SIT that probed the 2002 Gujarat riot cases.

The appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The SC-appointed SIT had given Narendra Modi, then Gujarat Chief Minister, a clean chit in the Gulbarg Society massacre case in which 69 people were killed during the 2002 riots.

YC Modi, who is presently Additional Director, CBI, will take over from Sharad Kumar after the latter completes his tenure on October 30.  Kumar, who was appointed as DG NIA in 2013, was given two extensions post-retirement by Modi Government.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of Ministry of Home Affairs for appointment of YC Modi, IPS (AM:1984) as Director General (DG), National Investigation Agency (NIA) with pay at level -16 of the pay matrix for a period up to the date of his superannuation i.e. 31.05.2021, from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” reads the order issued by ACC.

The ACC has also approved the appointment of Y C Modi as OSD in NIA with immediate effect, to ensure smooth takeover of responsibilities in the agency.

The Centre on Monday also appointed Rajni Kant Misra, a 1984-batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, as Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). He will take over from Archana Ramasundram who is retiring from service on September 30.

In February last year Ramasundram, a Tamil Nadu cadre, 1980-batch  IPS officer, had become the first woman to head a Central paramilitary force that guards the country’s borders with Nepal and Bhutan.

Misra will head the SSB for a period up to the date of his superannuation on August 31, 2019.
