BHOPAL: Three Christian men were arrested in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh for alleged involvement in religious conversions.

The three men, hailing from Burhanpur and Barwani districts of MP and Jalgaon district of Maharashtra, were produced before a local court in Khandwa district, which sent them to jail for two weeks.

Additional SP of Khandwa Mahendra Tarnekar said that the Dial 100 service of the state police got a call on Sunday about religious conversion activities by three Christian men at Sitabedi village in Khandwa’s Piplod police station area.

“A first response vehicle (FRV) was rushed to the village and they found the three men there,” said Tarnekar.

Subsequent investigations by cops revealed that the three men, identified as Amar Singh, Kishore Barela and Prabhakhar Barela, were in Sitabedi village since the last few days. They were holding a camp of 40-50 people when the cops reached there, said Tarnekar.

The Khandwa ASP said that the complainant Raju Barela alleged that the trio, bearing crosses in their hands,  were telling the villagers at the camp that all their illnesses would be cured if they started believing in Jesus Christ.

“Based on the complaint, it was prima facie found that the trio were indulging in religious conversion. They were subsequently arrested and booked under provisions of Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act 1968. They were produced before a local court in Khandwa on Monday and the court sent them to jail,” said Tarnekar.
