Suicide attack at BSF camp near Srinagar airport: Operations end as all three militants killed; One jawan dead; JEM claims responsibility

Militants today carried out a 'fidayeen' (suicide) attack on a BSF camp located near the high-security Srinagar International airport here Srinagar International airport.

SRINAGAR: Militants today carried out a pre-dawn suicide attack ('fidayeen' attack) on a BSF camp near the high-security Srinagar International airport here, leaving three jawans and a policeman injured while security forces killed three ultras.

One jawan succumbed to his injuries later.

The militants had breached into the 182 battalion headquarters of BSF located in Gogoland at around 4:30 am, police said. This battalion is entrusted with the security of the Srinagar airport runway. The area also houses training centres of the BSF and CRPF. Besides the only civilian airport, the technical airport used by Armed Forces and VIPs is also in the vicinity. Adjacent to the camp is the old Srinagar airfield which is been run by the Indian Airforce.

The operation ended at 1:50 pm with the gunning down of the third and last militant on the BSF campus, reported ANI.

  • 12: 15 pm - Airport operations, which were suspended in the morning due to the gunfight but later resumed as security forces managed to limit the action around the building where the militants are holed up. "Normal flight operations have resumed and passengers were boarding flights," said Director, Airport Authority of India, Srinagar, Sharad Kumar. (PTI)

  • 12:00 pm - Jaish-e-Mohammad (JEM)  militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack. A caller identifying himself as spokesman of the outfit told local news gathering agencies that Jaish militants carried out the attack. (PTI)
