Mega power backup saves locals
After the shutdown of the Suryachakra power plant, many locals feared a mega power crisis in Andaman. But the Andaman’s electricity department took prompt action and established a new 5 mega watt DG power plant at the Chatham Power House complex by Aggreko Energy Rental India Pvt Ltd under the aegis of NTPC. The power plant was put in operation on April 1. The DG sets are gradually loaded up to 5 MW. Through this power plant, the shortfall of power generation due to closure of the Suryachakra Power Plant has been managed. Although this arrangement has brought some relief to the islanders, there is still a shortfall of power in South Andaman.
Promotion for government employees
Here is a good news for those living in Andaman and waiting for promotion in various departments. Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands D K Joshi held a meeting at the Raj Niwas recently to review the progress of filling up vacancies at various departments in the . The Chief Secretary along with other secretaries and heads of departments were present at the meeting wherein the progress made in filling up the vacancies was reviewed.
The LG noted a number of steps have been already taken to fill up approximately 500 vacancies under the promotional quota in various departments in the last one to two months. The promotion orders for the same are likely to be issued by the respective departments within the next few days. While reviewing the progress, the Lt Governor directed that all the departments should invariably make all out efforts to fill up the vacancies and also initiate and complete the process of filling up those under the direct recruitment quota. This meeting has brought a new hope for hundreds of people who have been waiting for promotion since last several years.
CBSE paper leak: Students go on hunger strike
A group of Class XII students protested against the Central Board of Secondary Education decision to conduct the exam of the leaked papers all over again. The students began an indefinite hunger strike on Monday. Meanwhile Andaman’s lone Lok Sabha MP Bishnu Pada Ray has already met with Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar and urged him to exempt Andaman from re-exam. The Union HRD Minister has reportedly assured the BJP MP of looking into this matter.
College brings laurels to Andaman
A six-member team titled from B R Ambedkar Institute of Technology has brought laurels for Andaman at a national-level event. The team participated in the grand finale of Smart India Hackathon, 2018. There were 43 teams representing reputed institutes including IIT Roorkie, NIT Raipur, Assam Engineering College, Chennai Institute of Technology, Jeppiaar Engineering College. Out of 43 teams competing from the Coimbatore nodal centre, the BRAIT team ‘RescueTech’ emerged as the winner of SIH 2018.
