KOLKATA: In an incident of massive medical negligence, a 55-year-old alive ICU-admitted patient was declared dead by a state-run hospital in Kolkata on Friday morning but her son found her breathing at the burning ghat but even as he took her to another hospital, she died in front of another hospital on Friday night.

Sibani Biswas, a resident of Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, was admitted with high blood pressure, diabetes and blood infection to Barasat hospital on June 10 from where he was referred to R G Kar Hospital in Kolkata on June 11.

Her condition was deteriorating and she was admitted to the ICU. However, the hospital authorities declared her dead on Friday morning at around 7.15 am and issued her death certificate. When Sibani's son Sukamal Biswas took her to Kashipur Burning Ghat on Friday afternoon at around 3.30 pm, he found her breathing while waiting in the queue for her cremation, sources revealed.

However, with the previous experience, Sukamal refused to take her back to R G Kar and instead took her to Madhyamgram hospital, some 20 km away, where she was declared brought dead. "My mother was left unattended since she was declared dead at around 7.15 am. Hence, I refused to go back there and instead took her to Madhyamgram where she died near the hospital," Sukamal Biswas said. However, the hospital has not issued any statement regarding the medical negligence.
