NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Sunday arrested an Indian Army major for allegedly killing another Indian Army Major's wife in Delhi Cantt area. The arrest has been made with the help of Uttar Pradesh Police as the accused identified as Nikhil Handa was hiding in Meerut.

The accused major Handa had allegedly slit the throat of his colleague's wife identified as Shailza Dwivedi in the national capital's Brar Square on Saturday. According to the police, the investigation revealed that to divert the investigation, the accused dropped deceased body on a road to make it a road accident case.

"At around 1:30 in the noon, her dead body was found near Delhi Cantonment metro station. Passersby informed the police about an unidentified woman's body lying on the road," a police official said. Later, cops found that 30-year-old woman's throat was slit by a sharp-edged weapon. The reason for murder is yet to be established. The cops got the first clue from the deceased's mobile phone which had some conversations with the accused Major Handa.

"Shailza was last seen with an unidentified man in a private car. Handa ran his car over her to disguise the murder as an accident. Later, we got an information that accused had met the victim Honda City car was spotted in Meerut. The accused was soon arrested and brought to Delhi," a police official said.

The body was sent to the mortuary after the formalities of the police and the forensic teams were completed.

It is reported that Shailza Dwivedi and her husband Amit Dwivedi lived in the Army quarters in west Delhi’s Naraina with their six-year-old son. He was posted in Dimapur, Nagaland and the couple had recently moved to Delhi for training. The two tied the knot in 2009.

"We have solid clues about the culprit, it is almost known. The motive behind the murder wasn't a robbery or sexual assault," Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Delhi) Vijay Kumar had said.

The woman was dropped at the Army Base Hospital in her husband's official vehicle by a driver yesterday.

Later, when he came back to pick her up, he could not find her and learnt that she did not attend her scheduled physiotherapy session.
