Over 1,400 lives lost due to rains, floods this monsoon, says Home Ministry

According to the NERC, as many as 254 people died in Uttar Pradesh while West Bengal witnessed the death of 210 people due to floods.

NEW DELHI: Around 1400 people have died due to rains, landslides and floods in 10 states so far in the monsoon season, data from the Ministry of Home Affairs revealed on Monday.

The National Emergency Response Centre (NERC), an arm of the ministry, revealed that 488 people lost their lives in flood-hit Kerala. Around 54.11 lakh people were severely hit by the floods since August 8. Kerala saw its worst flood this year since 1924.

“Around 14.5 lakh people, who have been displaced in the floods, still live in relief camps across the state while crops on around 57,000 hectares of land were destroyed in the floods,” the report states.
According to the NERC, as many as 254 people died in Uttar Pradesh while West Bengal witnessed the death of 210 people due to floods. The toll in Maharashtra was 139 while it was 52, 50, 37, 29 and 11 in Gujarat, Assam, Uttarakhand, Odisha and Nagaland respectively.

A total of 43 people have been missing across the country. Fifteen of them in Kerala, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, five in West Bengal, six in Uttarakhand and three in Karnataka. A total of 386 people have been injured in rain-related incidents across 10 states in the country.

In terms of number of districts affected, Odisha saw 30 districts affected while the number was 26 in Maharashtra. Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal had 23 districts each which were flood-hit while Assam had 25 districts. Karnataka and Nagaland had 11 districts each that were hit by floods while the number in Gujarat was 10.

In Assam, 11.47 lakh people bore the brunt of floods, which also hit crops on 27,964 hectares. In West Bengal, the waters hit 2.28 lakh people and damaged crops on 48,552 hectares of land.

In Uttar Pradesh, 3.42 lakh people have been impacted and crops on 50,873 hectares damaged. In Karnataka, 3.5 lakh people have been hit and crops on 3,521 hectares of land damaged.
