Ahmedabad, Oct 14 (PTI) The Gujarat government todayimposed the 'Disturbed Areas Act' in wards 1 to 12 of Suratcity as well as in several residential colonies within theBapod police station limits in Vadodara.

Since the act had been imposed, the owners of land andother immovable properties in these areas would have to seekthe permission of the collector before selling their assets,an official release issued here said.

Sangita Patil, a BJP MLA from Surat, had recentlydemanded the imposition of the 'Disturbed Areas Act' in herconstituency, Limbayat, to "prevent Muslims from acquiringresidential properties of Hindus".

Patil had sent her written request for the imposition ofthe act to the district collector after Hindu residents of theLimbayat area of Surat city made several representations onthe issue.

The act -- The Gujarat Prohibition of Transfer ofImmovable Property and Provision for Protection of Tenantsfrom Eviction from Premises in Disturbed Areas Act, 1991 --which is already in force in various parts of the state,including in Vadodara, seeks to check transfer of propertiesin communally sensitive areas, which are officially describedas "disturbed areas".

The act requires the prior consent of the collector tosell property. The collector has the power to hold an inquirysuo motu (on his own) or on an application from any person incases involving possession of immovable property allegedly inviolation of the act's provisions.

The act also has provisions for penalty and the offenceunder it was cognisable, the release said. PTI KA RMTRC.
