New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI)The CPI(M) today welcomed theappointment of a Dalit priest to a temple in Kerala and laudedthe communist government in the state for ensuring socialjustice by putting an end to caste discrimination.

"This is a major step taken to ensure that Brahmanicalconsiderations are replaced with anti-caste democraticapproaches to ensure that all Hindu believers get their dueshare in priestly functions", the Left party said, hailing thedecision as a historic and bold step.

22-year-old Yedu Krishnan, Kerala's first Dalit priest,recently took charge at the Shiva temple at Valanjavattom inPathanamthitta district.

Under the supervision of the state's Left DemocraticFront government, the Travancore Devaswom Recruitment Board(TDRB) decided to appoint six Dalits as priests along with 30other non-Brahmin priests. The Board manages more than 1200temples and functions. PTI CSNBSA.
