Russian leader Vladimir Putin made the proposal to pause fighting in his four-year invasion of Ukraine during a call with US counterpart Donald Trump a day earlier.
Trump is showing new confidence that he can finally make headway on ending the Russian invasion. He's also signaling that he's ready to step up pressure on Putin if he doesn't come to the table soon.
Describing the conversation with Trump as "frank and meaningful," Putin said Russia was in favour of a "peaceful settlement" and that compromises would need to be found to suit both parties.
