CHANDIGARH: Goals from penalty corners gave India a 2-0 victory over Olympic and world champions Germany, while Netherlands eased to a 4-1 win over New Zealand in the four-nation Punjab Gold Cup field hockey tournament on Tuesday. India, which last beat Germany in 2004, also had a series of excellent saves by goalkeeper Baljit Singh to thank for the victory. The host nation was in front after just three minutes, when former captain Deleep Tirkey converted from a penalty corner. But India was soon facing real pressure from Germany, which earned no fewer than seven penalty corners before halftime. India defended well after the restart and made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute when forward Parbhjot Singh netted a rebound off Germany goalkeeper Weinhold Max following another penalty corner. Early goals decided the day's other match. Lucas Judge of Netherlands set up the opening goal for Bob Voogd after two minutes and then added a second for the European champion just five minutes later. Netherlands made it 3-0 in the 11th minute with its first penalty corner of the game, Wouter Jolie beating New Zealand goalkeeper Kyle Pontifex with an angled shot. With the match largely under control, the Dutch team allowed more time and space to New Zealand, which was unable to exploit its first penalty corner in the 27th minute. New Zealand stepped up the tempo after the break and was rewarded when Nicolas Wilson dodged past defender Wouter Jolie to score. Experienced Dutchman Floris Evers put the result beyond doubt, though, with Netherlands' fourth goal in the 60th minute. India and Netherlands both have seven points each from three games in the invitational tournament, which ends on Feb. 9, with the Dutch team top of the standings on goal difference.
