HYDERABAD: The lean, bespectacled Ng On Yee of Hong Kong was second time lucky in India. After failing to win the World under-21 title a few years ago when she lost to her Chinese opponent in the final, Yee made the IBSF World Snooker Championship a memorable one to emerge as the new women’s World Snooker champion.

The 19-year-old Yee outsmarted the experienced 49-year-old Kathy Parashis of Australia 5-1 in the final at HICC on Tuesday. “It is great to win a title in my first appearance in World seniors final,’’ said a delighted Yee, who was hugged by her father Ng Yam Shui, who had participated in the Masters tournament.

In a match that saw the younger Yee dominating the final, a disappointing Kathy could not repeat her semi-final show. “I did not play well.

I thought I missed easy chances,’’ said the Aussie cueist. But nevertheless, Kathy said she was proud of reaching the World Championship final. “It is a fantastic achievement,’’ added Kathy.

Yee, who has been winning the boys under-21 titles for the past two years in Hong Kong, was fluent and aggressive today. She was solid in her potting and had bagful of tricks for the occasion.

IGOR MEETS BURDEN IN FINAL

The impressive Igor Figueiredo of Brazil outwitted the defiant Yu Delu of China 7-4 in the men’s semifinal. In the other semifinal, Alfie Burden warded off the challenge of Phillip Williams of Wales 7-3.
