Nine players including IM norm holder Ram S Krishnan and FIDE Master P Maheswaran share the third spot on 4.5 points. On the top board, Chennai youngster S Prasannaa held top seed Ram S Krishnan to a draw.
The double round day saw Balasubramaniam putting it across veteran C S Sridhar, while M Vinoth Kumar overcame Chennai junior P Mythireyan.
