I-League champions Churchill Brothers are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for glory in the 2013-14 season and also in the AFC tournaments they will participate in.
They have roped in two very experienced players from Portugal.
The 28-year-old Euripedes Daniel Adao Amoreirinha has been part of Portugal’s national squad during the Under-19 UEFA European Championship and has represented his country in the Under-21 Euros.
Hugo Miguel Alves Machado, 31, last turned out for Sanat Naft in the Iran Pro League, and has played with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma during his time at the Sporting Lisbon Academy.
In a joint interview with TNIE, the two stars answered the questions and put their thoughts together.
How does it feel to have come to Goa?
It feels great! Goa is historically connected to Portugal so integrating into the life and culture is very easy for us. Our manager in India Raul Fernandes was instrumental in convincing us to come to India.
What brings you here?
We have heard a lot about Goa and its people from Raul who convinced us that football in India is on the rise and that we could contribute a lot to the game. Our friend Henri Antchouet who has been playing here for the last two years was all praise for Goa and India. The Goans are culturally similar to the Portuguese and we are sure we will feel at home.
Reasons behind choosing Churchill Brothers? Can they retain the title this year?
We have heard a lot about the patron Churchill Alemao and his brothers and their families. We are aware that they are a family run football team and football passion runs very high in the entire family. Moreover they are the champions of India. We will do all we can to retain the title. Together with the owners, management and the fans, the team will do all they can to win.
What is your perception of Indian and Asian football ?
We are aware that Asian football is on the rise and Indian football is a volcano waiting to erupt. We would like to be a part of it.
What are your expectations from the game here ?
The competition in India is tight. Many famous players are currently plying their trade in India. We would like to pass on our expertise to the teams and would also like to to learn from them as football is a game where you never stop learning.
Portuguese legend Eusebio visited Goa sometime back. Are you aware of it?
Yes we are all aware of Eusebio and his travels. He is our football ambassador.
What is your approach to the game essentially?
Football is a learning process, despite being professionals, there is always a scope for learning on and off the field.
Do you think you can make a substantial contribution to Indian football?
We will do our best and keep up the name of Churchill Brothers in India and in the AFC Cup.
