Top seeds V Haribalu (Cognizant Technology Solutions) and P Bala Kannamma (Velammal School) emerged champions respectively in the open and girls’ sections of the Jawahar Engineering College -15th Tamil Nadu State Under-25 chess championship at the Hall of Chess in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. While Haribalu remained undefeated with 8 points, Kannamma tallied eight points to secure the trophies here on Wednesday.

Tenneti Venugopal Rao trophy for the best game was awarded to Tamil Nadu State Sub-Junior champion S Rohit Vassan of Vellore. JCD Prabhakar, president of the All India Chess Federation gave away the prizes.

Final Placings: Open: V Haribalu (Cognizant Technology Solutions) 8, S Kannan (Sivaganga) 7, 3 Aniruddh Aiyengar P (TVL) 6.5.  (Tvlr), R Prakashram, L Barath (both Chennai), M Aadhityaa (Kanchi) 6 pts; Girls: P Bala Kannamma (Velammal School) 8,  V Varshini (Chn) 6.5, M Sandya (Chn) 5.

Karthik shines

B Karthik’s 87 helped Fine Star CA to beat Pattabiram CA by 46 runs in a first division match of the TNCA-Thiruvallur DCA league here recently.

Brief scores (First Division): MAS CC 96 in 27.5 overs (G.Vignesh 45, MR Prahaladh 5/21, B Aditya 4/27) lost to Mogappair CC 97 for 1 in 18.5 overs (A Sultan 46 no, D Sachin Yethendra 26 no); Fine Star CA 238 for 6 in 45 overs (B Karthik 87, S Senthil Kumar 60) bt Pattabiram CA 192 in 40.2 overs (R Sabaorish 41, M Sabari Prabhu 40, P Sharath 3/16).
