NEW DELHI: Vinesh settled for silver in women’s freestyle 48kg after losing to Japan’s Yuki Irie, while Narsingh Pancham Yadav bagged bronze in men’s 74kg in the Asian Wrestling Championship in Doha.
Vinesh was impressive before losing the final. She beat Tatyana Amanzhol-Bakatyuk of Kazakhstan in the semifinals but couldn’t overcome the final challenge and
lost 2-3.
Narsingh was lucky to reach the bronze playoff despite losing in the qualification round. Included in the absence of Sushil Kumar, he lost to Daisuke Shimada 9-12 in the qualification round but made it to the repachage after the Japanese reached the final. After that, Narsingh beat Byungmin Kong of Korea 15-4 to enter the bronze playoff and then outplayed Zhiger Zakirov of Kazakhstan 3-1.
In men’s 70kg, Parveen Rana missed out on third-place finish as he went down fighting to Takafumi Kojima of Japan in the bronze playoff. Rana had earlier lost to Uzbekistan’s Bekzod Abdurakhmonov 8-13 in the semifinals.
In men’s 61kg category, Sonu was defeated by Masakazu Kamoi of Japan 5-1 in the qualification round, while Japan’s Takeshi Yamaguchi defeated Khatri Mausam 10-6 in the quarterfinals of 97kg category.
