NEW DELHI: Another import from South Africa, Jade Dernbach’s rise from Surrey to England has been steady than meteoric. Though he has often been bizarre, like some of the tattoos inscribed on his arm, he has given us a glimpse of his considerable worth as a potential long-term option for England. His baptism in the sub-continent has been figuratively through fire, but armed with a handful of variations and able to procure reverse swing, Dernbach hopes to improve through the course of the series.
If his side is in need of inspiration after their 125-run defeat against the hosts in Hyderabad, they needn’t look beyond the tattoo flashed on his right arm — carpe diem (seize the day). The medium pacer elaborated the need to forge a better show in Delhi, “There are quite a few areas where we went wrong in the last match, and in order to pose a challenge to India we have to improve in all three departments of the game. In the last game we did not do well in general and it was not only about the spinners,” he stated.
He stressed on flexibility, which England seemed to have lacked in Hyderabad. “One always has to be flexible depending on the conditions. Here it is certainly different from England. The humidity level is very high so you have to find ways to adapt as soon as possible and keep improving,” he explained.
However, he averred his side has enough strength to riposte. “It was one of those games where things did not go right for us but we still have four games to rectify our mistakes,” insisted Dernbach.
