Allrounder Dwayne Bravo has been appointed West Indies captain for the Champions Trophy, replacing Darren Sammy as one-day skipper.
Sammy will continue to skipper Twenty20 and test teams after winning just three ODI series over the last two years that included against lowly ranked Zimbabwe and . Sammy also led the West Indies to World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka last year.
"Our ODI results have not been as strong and we believe that it is best that we freshen the leadership of the team in this format," chairman of the selection panel Clyde Butts said in a statement on Sunday.
Sammy, Ravi Rampaul, Marlon Samuels, Chris Gayle, Devon Smith and Jason Holder have been recalled to the squad for the Champions Trophy after missing the series against Zimbabwe.
Bravo has scored 2,311 runs and taken 160 wickets with his medium fast bowling in 137 ODIs. He also led the West Indies in home series against Zimbabwe when Sammy was rested.
"I must say congratulations to Sammy in his leadership of the team and I am very happy to be taking over from him," Bravo said.
"I am even happier that he remains in the team and I am looking forward to working with him along with the team management and all the players, especially vice-captain Denesh Ramdin, Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Kieron Pollard and Marlon Samuels."
West Indies is placed in Group B of the Champions Trophy with Pakistan, South Africa and India its other opponents. Group A include defending champion Australia, England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
West Indies will open its Champions Trophy campaign against Pakistan at The Oval on June 7.
Butts said his selection panel has named a blend of youth and experience for the Champions Trophy.
"We have shown confidence in the players who have served well in both the batting and bowling departments and have identified some young players such as Jason Holder and Johnson Charles who add quality to the squad," Butts said.
