TNSJA to honour sports star trio at annual awards function

Sports stars Arokiya Rajiv, P Anitha and K Jennitha Anto will receive awards from the Tamil Nadu Sports Journalists’ Association.

CHENNAI: Three sportspersons from the state — Arokiya Rajiv, P Anitha and K Jennitha Anto — will receive awards from the Tamil Nadu Sports Journalists’ Association on Sunday. The main attraction of the annual function, held in co-operation with Arise Group, is the ‘Sportsperson of the Year award’. Scholarships for 12 promising sportspersons from the state will also be announced. “The awards are a great recognition for sportspersons, making their career journey more enjoyable. They are a big boost, particularly to youngsters,” said V Baskaran, former captain of the Indian hockey team. Baskaran had received Lifetime Achievement Award in the previous edition.

Humera bags crown Sixteenth seed Humera Begum Shaik defeated top seed Akansha A Bhan 7-6 (1), 6-1 to win the girls’ singles crown at the YMCA-TTT ITF junior tennis tournament, at YMCA Triangle Tennis Trust. Finals: Boys’ singles: Mirtunjay Badola bt Dev Javia 6-2, 7-6 (5). Girls’ singles: Humera Begum Shaik bt Akansha A Bhan 7-6 (1), 6-1. Boys’ doubles: Mirtunjay Badola/Megh Bhargav Patel bt Rithvik Choudhary Bollipalli/ Dev Javia 6-1, 7-6 (6). Girls’ doubles: Yubarani Banerjee/Humera Begum Shaik bt Kaavya Sawhney/Prinkle Singh 6-3, 6-2.

Loyola win TT final Loyola College beat SSN College in the table tennis final of the 85th Bertram Memorial tournament and bagged the Krishnasamy Iyer Memorial Cup. Panimalar Engineering College, Hindustan Arts College, St Joseph’s Engineering College, Loyola Whites and SRM University posted wins in the volleyball section.

Doveton champions Waseem’s 71 helped Doveton AIHSS beat St Mary’s HSS (Perambur) in the final of the interschool cricket tournament for John Doveton Trophy. Brief scores: Doveton AIHSS 124/2 in 20 ovs (Waseem 71, Jishnu 44) bt St Mary’s HSS (Perambur) 73/9 in 20 ovs (Allen 5/17).
