Spaniards, Thiem advance
The rusty clay has always favoured Spaniards, and three (Pablo Carreno Busta, Albert Ramos Vinolas and Guillermo Garcia Lopez) veterans safely progressed to the next round. The king of them all — Rafael Nadal — begins his quest for a record tenth title on Monday. Dominic Thiem underlined his burgeoning reputation by dismantling Australia's Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round.

Kerber dumped out
World No 1 and holder of two Slams, Angelique Kerber was sent packing by Ekaterina Makarova. That the loss in itself wasn't surprising speaks volumes about her form. She hadn't gone beyond the round of 16 in her last three events, and set an unwanted record — first women's No 1 to go out at the first round at Roland Garros.

Puig takes a big step
The Olympic women's gold medallist has had a crash landing since those heady nights in Rio. Monica Puig has struggled for form since then, and has lost more than she has won. In that context, the Puerto Rican's besting of Roberta Vinci in the first round could inject some much-needed confidence in her game.

Kvitova back in the mix
In one of the best feel good sports stories of the month, Czech Petra Kvitova, less than six months after suffering a knife attack at home, was back in the big time. The two-time Wimbledon champ cried after beating Julia Boserup. That's how much being back on-court meant to her.
