KARIMNAGAR: The Kotilingala temple and the surrounding historic village which was uncovered in the recent excavations is facing the threat of submergence on account of Sripada Yellampalli project in karimnagar.
The historical site was once ruled by the Satavahanas.
The revenue department and project engineers had already submitted a report to the Government that it would be submerged if the project was completed.
While 70 per cent of the project has already been completed, historians are crying foul that that the Government should take steps to conserve the historical site.
They are urging Government to build a protective wall around the site as a preventive measure. Though excavations at the site were resumed after long time in February, they didn’t last long due to lack of funds.
On the request of historians, several Telangana writers and TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter Jagriti too urged the Government to safeguard the rich cultural heritage.
Farmers, for long have been demanding compensation as the site happens to be agricultural land. As the Government didn’t heed to their demands, the site which was excavated three months ago was covered again and farmers resumed cultivation.
While revenue authorities were silent on the prospect of paying compensation to farmers, Archaeology authorities maintained that they would resume excavation only after compensation was paid to farmers.
Whatever, Telanganites are hoping that district minister Sridharbabu and Karimnagar and Peddapalli MPs would ensure that the historical site was protected before completion of Yellampalli project.
