RAJAHMUNDRY: The Praja Rajyam party (PRP), which has identified itself with a particular caste, has failed to garner the support of a majority of voters of that particular caste in both the Godavari districts.

Belying the expectations of PRP leaders, the party was able to win only four Assembly segments in East Godavari and only one in West Godavari district, that is, Tadepalligudem. However, it has failed to win any parliamentary seat.

Striking a sentimental chord, PRP president Chinranjeevi launched his election campaign from Rajahmundry stating that his film career, which earned him a good success, had also started from there.

Leaders of various political parties were also surprised over the overwhelming response to the public meetings here and anticipated spectacular results in these two district. Interestingly, even in the Kapu-dominated Konaseema region, PRP has failed to perform well and has bagged one Assembly segment - Kothapeta.

PRP has won in Pithapuram, Peddapuram, Kakinada Rural and Kothapet in East Godavari district.

Chiranjeevi visited the district twice to take part in the election campaign and toured extensively and there was a good response to his roadshows but the massive turnout failed to ensure victory at the hustings.

PRP stood third place in Rampachodavaram, Prattipadu, Rajanagaram, Rajahmundry city, P Gannavaram, Mummidivaram and Tuni Assembly constituencies in East Godavari district.

In West Godavari district, PRP was pushed to the third palce in Achanta, Chintalapudi, Tanuku, Undi, Unguturu, Denduluru, Gopalapuram, Polavaram, Kovvur and Nidadavole Assembly segments.

The party has won only Tadepalligudem seat in the district.

When PRP president Chinrajeevi failed to convince people during his election campaign in the district, Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy focussed on the district politics as it was a native district of PRP president Chiranjeevi.

The Chief Minister terminated his campaign schedule and made night halts in the district to discuss with party leaders to improve the prospects of the Congress party.

The Congress has won two parliamentary constituencies including Eluru, Narasapur and nine Assembly segments including Eluru, Ungutur, Polavaram, Palacole, Narasapuram, Bhimavaram, Achanta, Chintalapudi and Tanuku. The Telugu Desam party was able to bag Undi, Denduluru, Gopalapuram, Nidadavole and Kovvur constitutencies.
