HYDERABAD: Following the electoral success in the city, where it had made a clean sweep of Assembly and Lok Sabha seats, the Congress has set the ball rolling for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls. The State Government today issued orders approving the delimitation of 150 wards in the GHMC area.
``The process for conducting the GHMC election has begun. Work is progressing on certain procedures that have to be completed before holding the elections. They are expected to be over in about 100 days,’’ GHMC Commissioner SP Singh has said.
Speaking to reporters, Singh, along with GHMC Special Commissioner MT Krishna Babu, said the Corporation would be writing to the State Election Commission (SEC) for issuing a notification for preparation and publication of ward-wise electoral rolls and polling stations.
The Assembly Electoral Rolls as per Jan 1, 2009 would be adopted. After the publication of the wardwise list, a draft notification would be published inviting objections and suggestions. Ward reservations would be proposed for women, SCs and STs based on the available multi-purpose house survey (MPHS) and Census-2001 data.
The most onerous task for the corporation would be the door-to-door survey to identify BC voters.
A separate list of BC voters would be prepared and a draft notification would be published for filing of claims and objections on the list. Field verification of claims and objections would be done by verification officers, he said.
Later, the State Government would issue a notification specifying wards reserved for SCs, STs, BCs and women.
The SEC would then issue an election notification and the polls would be held 28 days later.
The Commissioner said 210 suggestions and objections were received to the draft notification on delimitation of wards of which 56 related to change of ward names. The GHMC had changed the names of 11 wards. About 137 objections were received for change of boundaries and five had been accepted, he said.
