RAJAHMUNDRY: Godavari Central and Eastern Delta Project Committee Chairman Reddy Brahman Choudary resigned from his post protesting the government’s decision to reduce the ayacut in the two deltas in the ensuing Rabi season.

Meanwhile, presidents of water distribution committees (WDC ) in the district are also ready to resign their posts. The government’s decision to reduce the ayacut to 1.35 lakh acres as against 2.65 lakh acres in the district is creating ripples among the district farmers.

Ir rigation De par tment officials who earlier assured to supply water to 2.65 lakh acres, were now saying that the water can be supplied to only 1.35 lakh acres. Out of which, 48,555 acres come under the Eastern Delta and 51,480 acres in the Central Delta.

Earlier, the two ministers Pilli Subashchandra Bose and Pinipe Viswaroop differed on supplying water to the ayacut.

The duo tried to protect the interests of farmers in their own areas.

However, the government decided to supply water under the Local Government Order (LGO) as demanded by Viswaroop.

About 24 TMC of water can be drafted from outside, out of which 10.06 TMC of water would be used for drinking water purpose and Visakha Steel Plant needs and the remaining water would be supplied to the Western Delta in West Godavari district and Eastern and Central Deltas in East Godavari district.

Farmers and WDC presidents were expressing unhappiness over the functioning of the Irrigation Department officials.
