KARIMNAGAR: National Khadi Board chairman Kumudben Joshi has suggested youths coming out of Universities to set up small scale weaving units to create more employment.
“When small scale units are improved, market potential will be increased automatically, encouraging weavers,’’ she observed.
Speaking to mediapersons during her visit to Metpally Khadi Society here today, she said how the simple device, Charaka (spinning wheel) promoted by Mahatma Gandhi, served as a symbol of self reliance and a source of income for the rural folks during freedom movement. ``Using modern technology it could modified for the benefit of weavers,’’ she said. According to her, the union government is spending Rs 1,500 crore on development of such units every year. ``In the place of ‘charakas’ soon the government will introduce `echarakas’ which will be run using solar energy. To start with, it will be implemented as a pilot project,’’ she explained.
“Government has also been giving loans to weavers with 32 to 35 per cent subsidy to promote Khadi industries,’’ she added.
