

HYDERABAD/NELLORE/VISAKHAPATNAM/ VIJAYAWADA: Nellore district bore the burnt of heavy rains that lashed the coastal districts under the influence of the vigorous northeast monsoon.
Roads, tanks and bridges were damaged in several mandals of the district and two more people died taking the toll to three. One death was also reported from Visakhapatnam.
In Nellore town, J Narasimhulu (45) was washed away near the Penna bridge, while another person was electrocuted in Naidupet.
Nellore town received 17.5 cm rain in the last 24 hours, record rainfall in the last 30 years while the entire district too received a record 32 cm rainfall.
Paddy transplanted in 1,019 hectares was submerged. Around 60 km of roads were damaged and two bridges - one under construction in Sullurpet and another old bridge in Mungamuru - collapsed.
An old Siva temple in Gouravaram in Kavali is holding out precariously.
Of the 717 minor irrigation tanks, 70 tanks were full and Ramannapalem tank developed cracks at three different places. The officials were asked to prevent the breach of the tank.
Kandaleru reservoir has so far received 44.2 tmcft of water and if ouflows increase there is a danger of submergence of Gundlagolu village. Officials have been directed to shift the villagers to safety. Dagadardi-Mungamuru canal became too weak.
However, the farmers in Tirupati, Anantapur and Kadapa were cheered up by the drizzle in the districts.
VISAKHAPATNAM: Many parts in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts have been receiving heavy rainfall since yesterday morning and most of the low-lying areas in these three district were inundated.
One woman died due to wall collapse.
Most of the low-lying areas in the city became water-logged. Rambilli in Visakhapatnam received 19.1 cm rainfall followed by Visakhapatnam 11 cm and Anakapalle and Chodavaram around 10 cm each.
Vehicular traffic was affected badly in the entire district. Landslips were reported in Araku at two spots between Semiliguda and Borra caves.
The Visakhapatnam to Kirandol passenger train of East Coast Railway had to be detained before the Borra railway station.
Water level in Meghadrigedda reservoir rose drastically necessitating lifting of gates. The discharge was 2,000 cusecs.
SRIKAKULAM: In Srikakulam, most of the parts like Collectorate road, RIMS and many low-lying areas in the town remained water-logged as the city received the highest rainfall of 8.6 cm followed by Narasannapeta 7.5cm.
Santhabommali, Baruva, Pathapatnam, Tekkali and other parts also received heavy rain and most of the paddy crop got submerged.
Seven fishermen who ventured into sea at Bandharuvanipeta coast remained stranded as their boat ran out of fuel. Rescue teams swung into action to save them.
VIZIANAGARAM: Pusapatirega received the highest rainfall of 11 cm followed by Bhogapuram, Denkanda, Vizianagaram and Kothavalasa that reported 9 cm each.
MACHILIPATNAM : The town remained water-logged due to downpour.
RTC services were cancelled as rain water entered the local bus stand and rose to a level of two metres stalling any movement.
Low-lying colonies, including Arunodayanagar, Adarshnagar, Gopalnagar, Sundaraiah Colony and Tylors' Colony were waterlogged.
