Dozens of Telugu Mahila activists were detained by police when they attempted to lay siege to the Secretariat here on Wednesday, in protest against increasing crimes against women in the state.
The activists, led by Telugu Mahila president Shobha Hymavathi, arrived at the Secretariat in a few vehicles in the afternoon.
As they got down from their vehicles, police obstructed them saying they cannot stage a protest at the Secretariat.
However, the agitators pushed forward, holding placards in their hands and raising slogans against the government.
They were taken into custody and shifted from there.
Speaking on the occasion, Hymavathi said that despite a woman being the home minister, crimes against women are on the rise in recent times.
Mentioning the rape incidents reported from across the state, she said that the state government had failed to contain the crimes as it has no commitment to protect women.
Stating that women feel threatened even while walking on the road, Hymavathi said the state government is not even allowing the Telugu Mahila activists to protest because the failures of the government will be exposed.
