A mishap was averted when fire broke out onboard INS Konkan, a minesweeper anchored at drydocks in the Naval Dockyard here Wednesday. Both the police and the Navy authorities confirmed that there were no casualties.

Even as the Operations Display was being held as part of the Navy Day celebrations by the Eastern Naval Command in the sea off RK Beach here in the evening, fire brokeout on board INS Konkan at the Naval Dockyard.

The mishap occurred at around 4.30 pm resulting in a part of the ship being burnt. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and put out the flames by 6.30 pm.

The police suspect that the fire occurred due to short-circuit. However, sources in the Navy said that the reasons for the incident could not be ascertained immediately and a probe would be conducted. The authorities said that the ship was undergoing maintenance. No major property loss and all men onboard were safe, they added.
