Eamcet-2013 results were out Wednesday and there are winners and well, losers. Among the latter, there are no bigger losers than engineering colleges! Only about 2.01 lakh students qualified in the test whereas there are 3.5 lakh seats in engineering colleges across the State. In fact, even the number of students, who took the test, was much less than the supply, at 2.76 lakh.
At present, there are 704 engineering colleges in the State. Effectively, the results mean that about 1.5 lakh seats in these colleges will go abegging this academic year. Furthermore, the State has 31,340 pharmacy seats in 277 colleges. If students opt for pharmacy courses, more number of engineering seats will remain vacant.
As for the winners, this time, Pallerla Sai Sandeep Reddy from Prakasam district secured the coveted top rank in engineering stream by scoring 154/160. Grandhi Srujanraj from Visakhapatnam and K Hanumantha Rao from Krishna district stood second and third respectively, scoring 152/160. In agriculture and medicine stream, V Venkata Vineeth from RC Puram, Hyderabad, bagged the first rank with 158/160 marks while Rohith Kumar and M Jagadeesh Reddy both from Vijayawada stood second and third respectively by scoring 157/160.
In both the streams, boys outperformed girls and secured all the top ranks. Only two girls managed to break into the top 10 in medicine. The lone girl in the top 10 in engineering stream was Y Jyotshna from Visakhapatnam who secured fifth rank by scoring 151/160. A Praveena from Kurnool stood sixth with 155 marks while S Pragna from Hyderabad got ninth rank with a score of 155 marks in the medicine stream. (Though their marks are same, ranks are different because of 25 per cent weightage given to marks secured in Inter).
Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Higher Education Damodar Rajanarasimha released the results. Compared to last year, the results in both the streams showed a decline in percentage terms. Last year, engineering stream recorded pass percentage of a little over 73, but it has declined to 72.67 per cent this time. In medicine stream, the pass percentage dropped by about five per cent to 80.79 per cent as against previous year’s 85 per cent. About 27,000 of the 75,687 candidates who failed to clear Eamcet-2013 in engineering stream, failed in their Intermediate too. Similarly, in the medicine stream, as many as 7,307 candidates failed in Intermediate.
In all, 2,01,308 cleared Eamcet engineering stream and in medicine, 80,778 came out successful. Results of nine candidates from Tirupati regional centre were withheld following the recommendations of CET committee and a report from the intelligence department.
