The Congress high command seems to have decided to bank on the “backward classes card” to steer the Congress ship safely to the coast in the ensuing general election against the headwinds like Jagan and anti-establishment factors.

Lending credence to this belief, it has started giving greater importance to members from non-Reddy communities while making appointments to the PCC executive committee.

This was evident from the appointment of Akula Lalitha as  president of state Mahila Congress whose appointment to the key post was announced by the AICC on Monday.

Lalitha, who is from Nizamabad district, is a former MLA and belongs to the Munnuru Kapu community.

With leaders belonging to Reddy community moving closer to the YSRC, the AICC top brass appears to have decided to rely on “BC plank” to revive its winning prospects in the ensuing general elections. This was reflected even in the re-constitution of the PCC executive, done by PCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana on Sunday.

Of the 30 leaders picked for the PCC executive, 19 are from down trodden classes _ 10 from BCs, four from SCs and one an ST. There are four minorities in the new executive. Only 11 posts have gone to forward communities.

According to party sources, the party high command will follow the same principle while finalising candidates to contest general election.

PCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana released the list of new executive committee on Monday.

The 46-member committee has seniors like KVP Ramachandra Rao, Kavuri Sambasiva Rao and Renuka Chowdary besides chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy’s close aides like M Ranga Reddy.

Apart from endowments minister C Ramachandraiah, a detractor of Kiran, former IPS officer DT Naik, some other prominent followers of Union minister K Chiranjeevi also figure in the new executive committee.

Botcha proposed the name of Rajya Sabha member T Subbarami Reddy to the post of treasurer of the PCC which is to be endorsed by the party high command.
