An unknown person was charred to death after fire broke out in a speeding car on the PVNR Express Way here Friday. Police suspect gas leakage might have led to the accident.

The mishap took place when the vehicle was returning from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) to the city.

Around 6.20 p.m., the Swift Desire caught fire as it reached pillar no 179 at Upparapally. Within a few minutes, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames leaving no chance for the man in the driver’s seat to escape. Rajendranagar Inspector S Jayaram said, “the vehicle was reduced to ashes. The driver was burnt to death. It’s difficult to find out his identity. Minutes after the mishap took place, Dial 100 received calls from locals. Police rushed to the spot.”

The Rajendranagar police registered a case under Section 174 Cr.PC (suspicious death). They requested inspectors of Cyberabad and Hyderabad to inform if any complaint was received regarding the missing driver. Traffic movement on the Express Way came to a standstill for over two hours due to the accident. The police had a tough time clearing the way.
