City Set to Soak in Vinayaka Festivities

VIJAYAWADA: The city is in grip of Vinayaka Chavithi fever what with hundreds of devotees flocking to the street-corner vendors on the eve of the festival to purchase items for making ‘patris’ for the special ‘poojas’ Friday.

The organisers of the festival at various locations are gearing up for the celebrations by purchasing of Idols which are made of vegetables, fruits and flowers. People were seen buying leaves, LED lights, 3,500 ‘Siva Lingams’ and other attractive materials for the occasion.

Meanwhile, the police are busy making necessary arrangements to monitor the proceedings and to avoid further complications during the immersion of idols.

According to the city police, as many as 1,108 applications were received from across the city seeking permission for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in the next 10 days. However, only 300 applications have been approved till date.

Guidelines have been issued to the organisers on the norms that are to be followed during the celebrations and immersion of Ganesh Idol. “Stringent action will be taken against those who violate the rules,” said a senior police official. He also revealed that idol immersion would not be allowed at the Durga Ghat due to repair works. “The Bhavani Ghat and Sitammavari Padalu have been allotted for immersion in the city,” he added.  In an attempt to save the environment, Bhadratha and Bhadyatha foundation, a voluntary organisation, distributed 2,000 clay idols to interested citizens at PWD Grounds Thursday. S Srinivas, convenor of the foundation, said, “Every one should feel responsible in saving the environment. We hope this initiative will improve awareness among the citizens.”

Guidelines To Organisers

  • NOCs should be obtained from VMC, Electrical Dept and Fire Dept
  • Deails of the size of idols, date of immersion, immersion route and vehicle should be disclosed to the Police Dept
  • One member of the organising committee must stay at the venue during night time
  • Sand and water must be kept ready at the venue in order to avoid fire accidents
  • Immersion of idols only at designated locations
  • Sprinkling of colours, usage of loud speakers and busting of crackers are strictly prohibited during the immersion celebrations
  • Separate volunteers should be allotted to avoid traffic snarls during immersion celebrations
