NAMMA Toilets Coming Up Soon

VIJAYAWADA: In an attempt to get rid of open defecation and improve sanitation facilities, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is setting up Namma toilets in its jurisdiction on a pilot basis. The toilets are likely to be launched in the third week of September.

It may be mentioned that the civic body introduced mobile toilets three years ago, which failed to grab the public’s attention due to lack of proper maintenance and security for women.

Following this, the VMC has shifted its focus to provide qualitative sanitation facilities in order to avoid complications caused by open defecation.

According to a VMC official, the Namma toilets are aimed at providing hygienic sanitation facility to every citizen including the differently-abled. “Recently, VMC commissioner C Harikiran, along with senior civic body officials, identified a few areas in the city suitable for constructing Namma toilets. The areas included Raghavaiah Park, Chuttugunta, Mallikarjunapeta and Machavaram Down. The works pertaining to these in the identified areas would be finished within the next 15-20 days,” the municipal official said

Meanwhile, the citizens are welcoming the civic body’s move to build new model toilets now that the existing public toilets are in a pathetic state.  S Harsha Kumar, an employee, said that this, certainly, is a useful project for the people of Vijayawada as many public toilets are in a horrific condition.
