RAJAHMUNDRY:Municipal Corporation of Rajahmundry (MCR) is making efforts to supply uninterrupted drinking water in the city along with 13 adjacent villages to be merged in the corporation shortly. As part of it, the MCR entrusted the task to NCPE, a consultancy company of Hyderabad, to prepare a project report.
The consultancy company prepared a detailed project report with an estimated cost of Rs 170 crore. The DPR includes construction of new water overhead tanks, laying of new pipelines and pumping stations. Nine new overhead tanks were proposed along with new pumping stations at Katheru, Kotilingalapeta and Dowleswaram.
MCR executive engineer E Panduranga Rao told Express that the plan was prepared to cater to the city needs up to 2020.
At present, the corporation supplies 65 million litres per day as against the actual need of 52 million litres per day.
(Corporation is supplying 155 litres per head per day as against of 135 litres per head per day).
The existing drinking water pipelines extend to 450 km, which can be increased after the merger of the proposed villages. The current city population is 3.80 lakh, which will increase after merger of the villages. At present as many as 21 overhead tanks are functioning in the city.
Further, the executive engineer said that six metric tonnes of alam is used for purification of the water drafted from the Godavari.
There are 35,800 tap connections in the city along with 1,000 public taps. As there are no bore wells in the city, the entire city depends on the Godavari water.
The water works wing is making efforts to supply more purified water to the denizens, he said.
