Research Institute to Treat New Diseases

TIRUPATI:  The Central government has sanctioned a national-level research institute for early diagnosis and management of newly-emerging communicable and non-communicable diseases to Andhra Pradesh.

The institute is said to be one among the 12 institutes that are being established by the central government across the country. The new research institute called the Model Rural Health Research Unit (MRHRU) will be mentored by the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad and funded by the Department of Health Research-Indian Council of Medical Research (DHR-ICMR).

As per the guidelines of MRHRU, the institute was set to work in a multi-disciplinary manner,  Dr D Shankar Reddy, MRHRU nodal officer, told newsmen here on Monday.

He added that the medical researchers could work along with other departments like engineering for the early detection of the diseases. ‘’Such type of environment can help in preventing the prevailing diseases from spreading,’’ he said and added that Sri Venkateswara Medical College (SVMC), a government medical college here would act as a implementing agency for the institute.

Initially, the institute would be functioning from the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Chandragiri town, 15 km from Tirupati, he said and added that an amount Rs 1.25 cr for building construction and Rs 1 cr for lab equipment had been sanctioned for the institute  under the Phase-I programme.

A land of admeasruing 600 quare meters, belonging to the SVMC, had been approved for housing the new institute, said SMVC principal MS Sridhar. Out of the Rs 1 cr (sanctioned for setting up lab facilities), `30 lakh would be utilized to install the lab equipment and required infrastructure to locate office rooms, he said and added that this process would  be completed by the end of this month.

The SVMC official also said that the MRHRU would be one of the three such institutes   located in South India. The other two institutes to perform the similar types of research work would located in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, said Shankar.

Acting as a mentor the NIN had recently issued job notification for the recruitment of six employees in four different categories. Among the posts available two would be recruited as scientists holding D and C grades and four as project assistant, statistician, administrator and technician, he explained.

The last date for receiving the application forms was July 13 and the names of the shortlisted candidates would  be finalised on July 14, 2015, he explained.
