VISAKHAPATNAM:  Colourful thematic paintings to soon adorn the walls of city railway station, Divisional Railway Manager Chandralekha Mukherjee said on Monday.

“To prevent people from defacing the walls of the station, we zeroed in  on this idea and these paintings will also give the station a unique facelift,” said DRM.

Every walls of the city railway platforms will now narrate a tale of traditional tribal art and culture of Araku, she said, adding that the works would begin from the 8th platform on Tuesday.

As part of the beautification works, most of the platforms, foot over bridges (FoB) and buildings have been painted in white and blue, helping people spot them from a distance. As a passenger-friendly move, the officials have also planned to set up two more escalators and elevators in the station.

Steps Towards Safety of Women

To ensure safety of women in the station as well as onboard trains, a helpline number ‘182’ was launched earlier this year. “Not many complaints have been lodged in this number since its launch, indicating that misappropriate incidents do not happen that often in Vizag station,” Chandralekha elaborated. Separate counters have also been opened at Passengers Reservations System (PRS) centres for dealing with reservation requisitions of differently-abled, senior citizens and women passengers.

“In the computerised PRS, there is a provision to allot lower berths to senior citizens and female passengers of above 45 years of age,” DRM added.

Moreover, plans to ply special trains for women to important and feasible stations, along with onstruction of exclusive waiting halls.
