

VISAKHAPATNAM: The rain trigerred by the depression developed in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday brought the much-needed respite for the citizens from the sweltering heat, but the overflowing drains on to the city roads put the motorists into incovenience.
Moderate to heavy rains lashed Simhachalam, Adavivaram, Gopalapatnam, Pendurthi and several parts of the city outskirts on Tuesday late night and it intensified on Wednesday morning covering almost all parts of the city.
Though parts of Andhra Pradesh is under cyclone-storm alert, people happily welcomed the rain and the day of respite .
While motorists hit Beach Road to enjoy rides in the rain, many thronged the beach area to capture rainy day selfies.
Meanwhile, heavy showers led to water logging in many areas, mainly along the National Highway (NH16). Heavy traffic snarls were seen at Gurudwara Junction, Satyam, Maddilapalem, Akkayapalem, Marripalem, New Colony, Diamond park, King George Hospital, One Town area. Many of the city roads remained waterlogged as the roadside drains swelled .
Several drains near Ambica Sea Green, Novotel Junction, One Town, MVP Colony overflowed, giving a hard time to the motorisrts. Pedestrians were seen wading knee-deep water.
Meanwhile, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam district also experienced heavy to moderate showers on Wednesday.
Following instructions from Vizianagaram Collector MM Nayak, an emergency control room has been setup in the mandal headquarters and at the RDO’s office.
In Srikakulam, Ponduru, Etcherla and Gara mandals received rain for over two hours continuously.
