VISAKHAPATNAM: The Eastern Fleet of Indian Navy has assumed the command of INS Tarmugli at the commissioning ceremony held here on Monday. The first of the four highly manoeuvrable fast attack crafts being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) of Kolkata, the ship will strengthen the coastal patrol and surveillance operations along the east coast.
Vice Admiral HCS Bisht, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command, commissioned the ship into the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard. INS Tarmugli would be based in Visakhapatnam under the Naval Officer-in-Charge (Andhra Pradesh).
It is an improved version of the first Follow-on Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (WJFAC) which was conceived, designed and built indigenously, as part of the nation’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and indigenisation efforts in the warship design and construction.
The ship is capable of operating in shallow waters at high speeds and is equipped with enhanced fire power. Built for extended coastal and offshore surveillance and patrol, the warship is fitted with advanced MTU engines, water jet propulsion and the latest communication equipment.
