RAJAMAHENDRAVARAM: Suspense continues over the release of P Sathyam Babu, who was acquitted by the Andhra Pradesh High Court in connection with the rape and murder of Ayesha Meera in her hostel a decade ago. He was lodged in jail for the last eight years and is expected to be released on Monday.

Following the high court’s orders for immediate release, Satyam Babu's mother P Mariamma (60) eagerly waited outside the Rajamahendravaram Central Prison on Saturday morning. But as the court orders had not reached central jail authorities till Saturday evening, family members will have to wait for at least 36 hours to see Babu outside prison.

Accompanied by lawyers, members of various Dalit organisations and family, Mariamma longed to see her only son after fighting a prolonged legal battle. She said the politicians and police had worked hand-in-glove to frame Sathyam Babu for the rape and murder of 19-year-old Ayesha Meera in 2007. Waiting under the scorching sun, the elderly woman questioned as to who would compensate for the loss of Satyam's eight years in jail.

"His youth has been lost in prison and he has lost his dignity in society. Who will compensate for his losses?" she demanded.

Andhra Pradesh Bar Council member Muppalla Subbarao said that the court orders have not yet reached the jail officials and hence, they are anticipating Sathyam Babu's release on Monday.
