Mild showers bring cheer to coastal Andhra Pradesh

VIJAYAWADA: While the day temperatures remained high on Monday morning, mild showers brought some respite from the heat in the evening hours in north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Rain associated with strong winds lashed parts of Srikakulam district for about half-an-hour on Monday afternoon. Power supply was disrupted for more than two hours and hoardings in many areas collapsed. A few trees were also uprooted, while mango and cashew orchards were damaged by strong winds. Agency areas in Visakhapatnam district received showers, while mild showers brought cheer to Vizag city. According to IMD Hyderabad, Chintapalli and Paderu areas of Visakhapatnam district received 2 cm rainfall.

Meanwhile, dry weather conditions were witnessed in south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema region on Monday. The day temperatures increased by 1-2 degree Celsius across the State and in Rayalaseema the temperatures are ranging between 38 and 41 degree Celsius.

Heat wave set to intensify in State

According to State Disaster Management Authority, 39 mandals registered moderate heat wave and one mandal registered severe heat wave on Monday. In the coming 2-3 days, almost 34 mandals across the State are going to witness moderate and severe heat wave conditions.

Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts are more prone to heatwave conditions. The temperatures are set to increase 1-2 degree Celsius above the normal temperature.

Anantapur recorded highest temperature of 41 degree Celsius, followed by Kurnool and Nandyal (40 degree Celsius). Vijayawada, Tirupati and Tuni recorded 39 degree Celsius, while Visakhapatnam recorded 37 degree Celsius.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad Director YK Reddy said, "The day temperatures across the State will go up as the thunderstorm activity is declining and moving out of State. Heatwave conditions will also intensify, as the dry weather conditions are prevailing across the State. As days go by, the coastal AP would witness severe heat wave conditions."
