Chinese firm to open unit in Tirupati

The Electronics and Communications (E&C) Department on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China-based Astrum for setting up a manufacturing unit with an investment of Rs 100 crore.

VIJAYAWADA: After convincing Flex Electronics, the third largest electronics manufacturer in the world, to set up shop in AP, the government has managed to attract another electronics manufacturer to the State. The Electronics and Communications (E&C) Department on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China-based Astrum for setting up a manufacturing unit with an investment of Rs 100 crore. Speaking after exchanging the copies of MoU, IT Minister Nara Lokesh said that the firm would establish its unit in the manufacturing cluster in Tirupati. 

“AP is turning into a hub of electronics manufacturing. It is evident from the fact that 26 of the every 100 mobile phones manufactured in the last four years in the country are from our State. We are working towards our aim of ensuring that 50 per cent of the country’s electronics goods are manufactured in AP,” Lokesh said.

The E&C Department officials said that Astrum, which will manufacture mobile phones, laptops, audio and video equipment, computer components, gaming controls and other consumer electronics goods, will create 1,000 jobs.”Already 15,300 women were given employment by Foxconn in Sri City. Flex Electronics will create 6,600 jobs. Reliance Jio and Karbonn will open their units soon and create more than 25,000 jobs,” Lokesh explained.He said the State government is planing to turn AP into a manufacturing hub. “We are creating exclusive clusters for electronics manufacturing and have been extending incentives.”
